Putin Is All But Certain to Rule Russia Into 2027

The money that once entertained a Kremlin succession crisis has walked away, betting instead on a secure Putin presiding over a slow, grinding war of attrition in eastern Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin's grip on power is not loosening — it is hardening. The money that once gave meaningful weight to a Kremlin upheaval now puts the chance of Putin leaving the presidency before mid-2027 at less than one in five, and that number fell sharply in the past day. Whatever theory of Russian instability animated those bets — coup, health collapse, elite fracture under sanctions — traders are abandoning it.

Read alongside the rest of the war's markets, the signal is coherent and sobering. Russia is all but certain to take Kostyantynivka, the Donbas stronghold, by the end of next year; it has roughly even odds of entering Dobropillia by December. Ukraine's chances of clawing back any Crimean territory this year sit near one in ten, and the prospect of a coup in Kyiv is priced as a rounding error. This is not a picture of a regime under strain on either side. It is a picture of a war settling into Russia's preferred tempo: slow, costly, forward.

The Putin repricing and the battlefield odds explain each other. A leader losing a war loses his court; a leader grinding out territorial gains, however expensive, keeps it. Three years of Western sanctions have failed to crack the Russian elite, mobilization has not triggered the domestic revolt some predicted, and the Prigozhin mutiny of 2023 — the one genuine shock to the system — was crushed and its author buried without a successor. Each month the war continues without a Kremlin crisis, the succession bets look more like wishful thinking, and the money has finally said so decisively.

The one genuine uncertainty in the cluster is the war's endpoint, not its author. A ceasefire by year-end is priced at 42 percent — close enough to a coin flip that the split itself is the story. Diplomatic pressure, chiefly American, has kept a deal plausible; Russia's steady advances have kept it unnecessary from Moscow's point of view. The odds lean slightly against an agreement, and they lean that way for a reason the rest of the board makes plain: Putin is winning ground and losing nothing at home, which is a weak recipe for concessions.

For Ukraine's backers, the implication is uncomfortable and immediate. Every Western strategy premised on outlasting Putin — waiting for the regime to buckle under economic pain or elite exhaustion — now runs against the collective judgment of sixteen million dollars in staked capital. Policy built on his departure is policy built on an 18 percent event. The realistic planning horizon includes Putin at the table, or refusing to come to it, through at least mid-2027.

The paths from here are few. Most likely, on the money's read, the front keeps creeping westward through the Donbas while ceasefire talks sputter, and Putin enters 2027 stronger diplomatically than he began 2025. A near-even second path sees a ceasefire land by December — likely on terms that ratify Russian gains, given who holds the momentum. The underpriced scenario is the one traders just marked down: a sudden internal rupture in Moscow. At these odds, any genuine sign of elite fracture — a purge that misfires, a health crisis, a second mutiny — would upend not just the succession bets but the entire cluster. Until then, the story the money tells is simple: the war grinds on, and the man who started it isn't going anywhere.
